The conversion of coal to liquid fuels seems headed for the back burner in light of Chevron Corp.’s announcement that it has found huge oil reserves in the Gulf of Mexico at a distance from the coastline of Louisiana and Texas.

The former cafeteria building in the South Charleston Technology Park has been demolished. The structure, known as Building 791, was built in 1959. When it was owned by Union Carbide Corp., the second floor contained the cafeteria and the first floor had a library, conference rooms and offices.
